The Olympic Spirit... Bullshit!

When we study Ancient Greek history, in schools, we are taught that during the Games period all populations fighting wars would stop for that period. This is the Olympic Peace period, the Pax Olimpica. Well... These days we are seeing the Olympic torch being constantly object of attacks and disruptions attempts by those requesting independence for Tibet and respect of human rights in China. While I can support the freedom of speech and I can agree or less on the point of view of a free Tibet, I feel that these attempts to boycott Beijing 2008 is an unfair request and for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the Olympic spirit goes beyond the politics but, as we have seen since Moscow Olympics, there is very little left in the Spirit. All boycotts since Moscow and the granting of the Olympic Games to Atlanta thanks to Coca Cola are a clear signal that money rules. However, for those that have such a high consideration of freedom, human rights and Olympic ideals, it's a shame to use the torch as a stick and a weapon. Another thing I feel like saying is that if we reckon that China is not the most respectful country in terms of human rights, boycotting the Olympics doesn't help the Chinese people. This kind of behaviour widens the gap between the People of this country and those of the Western world. I read of censorship about the protests taking place in the world, on the Chinese media. Absolutely false. I see on the news the events shown giving details of both versions. I do not see those the Chinese version on the Western Media and I really wonder which one is worse. anyway, the Olympic word and logos are protected by copyright and this should make people think on how low the Olympic spirit has fallen. All the best and try to know China and the Chinese people a bit more than letting yourselves go to rage and anger. There is a lot more to know behind some oval eyes and behind a red flag with 5 stars.
